John Milton’s Paradise Lost, V.S. Naipaul’s The Enigma of Arrival, Richard Wilbur’s Collected Poems, Michael Donaghy’s Collected Poems and Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy. My scholar friend reckons I should become more systematic in my reading. He might have a point.

The Enigma of Arrival – what a weird book!

Oh? So far it was pretty uneventful with lots of mention of English hills and farmers and Stone Henge.
Your comment has made me all excited about how it all will end.
Will the narrator prove to be a cross-dressing warthog?
Or will the end reveal that England is merely a simulacrum of the narrator’s fevered mind and the earth is in fact ruled by giant pink squid with, you know, issues?
There was me thinking V.S. Naipaul was just another Nobel Prize Winner.
